For almost 20 years, social media has transformed the way we do life and for nearly 30, the majority of Black Americans have lived some aspect of life on or in front of a device. This tech and creative space has mostly been dominated by non-Black creators and built within wealthy communities. Today, free thought, ideas and art — created by Black and brown people is exploited and monetized, while the purveyors of the aforementioned face abuse and scruitny. Changing times cause for change. Enter Yapper.

Yapper v1.0.2 is a social platform powered by Black and brown creators that creates safe community for marginalized voices. From breaking news and entertainment to sports and politics, Black creators lead the pack. The Yapper communities brings the collective together in familiar ways. Come Yap!

Challenge

Sustaining an innovative platform is challenging. A collective idea remains an idea until it’s sparked to action. The Challenge is that we’ve watched the detoritaton, abuse and unfounded attacks on Black and brown bodies for too long. Why is it something we continue to accept?  How can we move past it? Why is most of what we do owned by non-Blacks? What is the value of the Black $1?

All thoughts that birthed the concept.

  • Black Twitter

    Black Twitter is an internet community largely consisting of African-American users on the social network Twitter focused on issues of interest to the black community in the United States. Feminista Jones described it in Salon as “a collective of active, primarily African-American Twitter users who have created a virtual community … [and are] proving adept at bringing about a wide range of sociopolitical changes. (Wikipedia)

  • Black Twitter deserves it all. Undoubtedly a safe space to do — what we do.
  • Where is Black Twitter to go amidst the overhaul of a coveted platform by the world’s greatest ego manic.
  • Innovation and community

    The world is always changing and we are all part of it. Yesterday’s unimaginable things are possible today. And what is impossible today can be realized tomorrow. We have the important task of bringing the future closer. And the future belongs to the creative, resourceful and dynamic people. Several writers see Black Twitter interaction as a form of signifyin’, wordplay involving tropes such as irony and hyperbole. André Brock states that the Black Tweeter is the signifier, while the hashtag is signifier, sign and signified, “marking … the concept to be signified, the cultural context within which the tweet should be understood, and the ‘call’ awaiting a response.” He writes: “Tweet-as-signifyin’, then, can be understood as a discursive, public performance of Black identity.”

    We believe it’s innovative. Life changing. Culture altering. A community of individuals that cares about each other, our culture and the future.

  • Time is Money

    The how — more difficult then the when. When there’s no money, there’s no time. We’ve spent the year planning for next year and Yapper was at the back of the budget and project list (initially dubbed The Backyard).   • The Backyard Vs Yapper

    How many times have you been stopped in your tracks by a problem? You look at the problem from all sides until you think you know that problem, but it still blocks your path. For centuries people have told us that a problem cannot exist without its solution existing at the same time, but the key is looking beyond the problem so that you can see the solution. When your focus is preventing you from seeing anything but the problem, meditations which relax your mind and guide you to finding solutions change from being a luxury to being a necessity.

    That was word salad. The truth is — we had the concept and the idea, but the inspiration is our future. We love us.
